• Avoid temptation. The store is set up to entice you to buy. So there are two things you can do to stick to a grocery shopping budget.
    • Never go the store hungry.
    • Create a list and stay to it.
    • Better yet, plan all your meals for the week and then buy only what you need.
  • Buy in bulk. The cost of a freezer may allow you to save money.
  • Check local newspaper fliers and other advertising to find sales.
  • When things you use regularly are on sale, buy in large amounts and store or freeze.
  • Buy store brands. They are usually as good as name brands. In fact, some name brands sell to large store chains so they can put their name on it.
  • Don’t shop eye level. The easier it is to see and reach, the more you’ll buy so these can be the expensive items. Look and reach down low and up high for better prices.
  • Don’t buy frozen things. Better to buy the ingredients for casseroles, lasagna, or stews and then portion them and freeze. Frozen foods are convenience foods and have lots of packaging and advertising that you pay for beyond the food content.
  • Buy good meat, but buy less popular cuts and save. For example, chicken thighs are tender and taste great but are a lot less expensive than chicken breast.
